What Should I Include in My Car’s Emergency Kit?

If you don’t have an emergency kit in your vehicle, we here at Dave’s Auto Repair, LLC, recommend you get one. You don’t have to buy an expensive preassembled kit. You can make one up yourself. You never know what could happen when you’re on the road, so gather the following items and have them in your car, truck, or SUV at all times just in case you have an on-road emergency.

Things for You and Your Passengers

With the cold Indiana winters, there is always a possibility you might get stuck in a blizzard or be stranded for a lengthy time for another reason. This is why it’s important to keep things in your vehicle that will help you survive for hours, if necessary. Suggested items include

  • Blankets
  • First-aid supplies
  • Flashlight (keep extra batteries in the kit, too)
  • Granola or protein bars
  • Paper towels
  • Pens
  • Toolkit or a pocket knife at a minimum
  • Water (bottled)
  • Writing paper

Think about your vehicle’s design before you decide where to store these items. You might think everything should go in the trunk, but what if you can’t get out of your car? If you have backseats that turn down from the inside, you will still have access to your trunk. If you don’t, keep at least some water, food, and a blanket inside.

Things for Your Automobile

Your on-road emergency might be automotive related, and you may be able to fix it and get back on the road if you have a few things in your emergency kit for your car, too. Always carry with your vehicle:

  • Jumper cables
  • One quart of motor oil
  • One gallon of coolant
  • One can of tire sealant and inflator
  • A tire gauge
  • An inflated spare tire, jack, and lug wrench
  • An ice scraper
  • Washer fluid in a spray bottle
  • Flares and emergency reflectors

Again, consider access to these items in conjunction with your automobile’s design. Obviously, some items such as the spare tire will have to be in the trunk, but you may want to keep the ice scraper and tire gauge in your glove compartment.
